THE Ping river flowing through Chiang Mai reached a record high of 5.28 metres at P1 gauge point, Nawarat Bridge, at 8 a.m. this morning (Oct. 5) triggering flood chaos with the whole northern city heavily inundated, TV Channel 7 said.
This surge of the river is higher than the maximum 4.90 metres measured during the great floods in 2011 and this year’s previous record 4.93 metres.
All seven zones of Chiang Mai city are inundated with metre-high floodwaters especially important places such as Warorot Market and Night Bazaar. Residents are urgently being evacuated to safe areas.
Meanwhile floodwaters flowed rapidly into San Pa Tong district encircling several villages trapping the residents. Soldiers and rescue volunteers from several areas moved in to help them since the middle of last night.
