THE Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) said this morning (June 6) that the coronavirus cluster at Wongwian Yai in Thonburi, on the west bank of the Chao Phraya river, has come under control after almost 100 percent of the area was checked from May 20 onwards with there now being over 20 patients in this zone, Sanook.com said.
Meanwhile the Public Health Ministry said this morning there were 2,671 new Covid cases in the last 24 hours with 2,067 being among the general public and 604 in prisons and detention centres. There were also 23 more fatalities raising the death toll to 1,236.
The new batch of cases increased the cumulative confirmed total since the start of the pandemic to 177,467 and 148,604 in the current wave that started on April 1.
Another 2,424 patients were cured taking total recoveries to 126,517 while 49,714 are undergoing treatment with 1,209 in severe condition and 361 requiring ventilators.
Regarding Bangkok, BMA’s spokesman Pol. Lt. Col. Pongsakorn Kwanmuang also said that department stores in the Siam shopping area of the city had said that the cluster there was detected before April 30 with 134 cases found. Since then continuous proactive search has been mounted with 5,000 people tested and infection rate standing at 0.4%.
BMA is not stopping surveillance in the Siam shopping area and has a testing station at Pathum Wanaram Temple. The city administrators are confident of being able to control this cluster.
Meanwhile people in the Pratunam area of the city are getting ready to stage a protest after BMA suddenly cancelled proactive inspection amid a heavy outbreak here and the rest of Ratchathewi area.
However Pol. Lt. Col. Pongsakorn said BMA did not cancel the appointment for proactive inspection, only made a change after a cluster was found at a construction camp in the area and the inspectors had to be sent there.
Where the rest of Ratchathewi district is concerned, inspection is taking place from 9 a.m. tomorrow.
