THE Cabinet today (June 29) resolved to cancel Tuesday, July 27, 2021 as a special holiday that would have led to a long weekend earlier hoped to help spur tourism but now halted to prevent inter-provincial travel to curb the spread of coronavirus, Sanook.com said this afternoon (June 29).
Ms. Ratchada Thanadirek, deputy spokesman for the Prime Minister’s Office, said the Cabinet cancelled this holiday because the current situation requires intense measures to control the spread of Covid-19 with this step being in tandem with other public health measures.
Monday July 26, 2021 had been declared a holiday in lieu of Asanha Bucha Day while Wednesday July 28, 2021 is a holiday to mark His Majesty the King’s birthday.
“Originally, the Cabinet had declared July 27 a special holiday because it wanted people to travel during the long break. However the situation has changed this year requiring more stringent public health measures, with the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) also asking to halt cross-provincial travel. The cabinet therefore approved the cancellation of the holiday on July 27,” the deputy spokesperson said.
At the same time, relevant agencies were asked to help people in cancelling advance travel and hotel reservations.
Earlier this afternoon CCSA said that there were 4,662 coronavirus cases over the past 24 hours and 36 fatalities with this taking the overall death toll to 1,970.
The new batch of Covid cases raised the cumulative confirmed total since the start of the pandemic to 254,515 and in the current wave that began in April to 225,652.
Another 2,793 patients were cured adding up to 205,064 who have been discharged from hospital while 47,481 are still undergoing treatment.
Of today’s cases 3,683 emerged in service and health systems, 941 found through proactive search in communities, 10 people caught the infection in prisons and detention centres while 28 overseas arrivals were placed in state quarantine.
