THAILAND posted the highest single day total of 21,379 new Covid-19 cases and 191 deaths today (August 6) with the Transport Ministry also reporting that 1,943 employees got infected from March 2020 onwards, Sanook.com and TV Channel 7 said.
Of the large number of new cases, 20,895 were among the general public and 484 in prisons and detention centres.
This raised the cumulative confirmed total since the start of the pandemic to 714,684 and in the current wave that began in April 685,821.
Today’s 191 fatalities took the death toll to 5,854.
Another 22,172 patients were cured while 212,926 are undergoing treatment.
Meanwhile the Transport Ministry said altogether 1,943 employees both at the ministry and its 20 affiliated agencies got infected with coronavirus from March 1, 2020 to August 4, 2021 with this being 1.72% of its 113,151 workforce, TV Channel 7 said.
Of those employees who fell sick, 778, or 40.04%, are undergoing treatment, 1,146, or 58.98%, have recovered while 19, or 0.98%, died.
Another 3,369 employees, or 2.98 % of the workforce, are currently quarantined.
The five agencies hit the hardest are as follows: Bangkok Mass Transit Authority, or BMTA, with 551 cases; followed by Airports of Thailand Plc, with 282 cases; the Department of Highways, 224 cases; the State Railway of Thailand, 183 cases; and Expressway Authority of Thailand, 155 cases.
