ISSUING another warning in a Facebook post today (Apr. 18) was Assoc. Prof. Thira Woratanarat of Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Medicine pointing out that yesterday’s 128 Covid deaths was the third highest in the world with this clearing showing that the situation here is still severe, Sanook.com said.
The Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) stated this morning that there were 16,994 cases and 124 deaths over the past 24 hours while 17,775 cases and 128 deaths were logged yesterday morning.
Yesterday worldwide there were 451,493 Covid cases and 1,186 deaths adding up to 504,655,744 cases while the death toll rose to 6,222,757,
Thira mentioned that the five countries reporting the most Covid cases yesterday were South Korea, France, Italy, Japan and Australia.
At the same time nine of the 10 countries logging the highest number of Covid cases were in Europe and Asia, with countries from these two continents also being 16 out of the top 20 countries doing so.
Asia and Europe also collectively account for 88.17% of the daily Covid cases and 87.94% of the deaths.
Asia alone chalked up 44.54% of global Covid cases and 45.69% of the deaths.
Situation in Thailand
Thira said that yesterday, Thailand’s total of 17,775 new infections, plus 13,617 ATK cases, was the sixth highest in the world and third highest in Asia, while yesterday’s death toll was the third highest in the world with this being 23.61% of all reported deaths in Asia.
Comparing weekly statistics
Globally the number of new infections decreased by 25% and deaths by 23% last week, Thira mentioned.
Looking at Asia alone, new cases dropped by 28% and deaths by 23%, equal to the global average.
However where Thailand is concerned, compared to the previous week new cases dipped by 11% (less than the Asian and global average) but the number of deaths climbed by 19%.
The associate professor underscored that the above information clearly reflects that the outbreak in Thailand is still severe compared to the overall picture of Asia and that of the world.
He urged a review of the previous Covid control and prevention measures as in his opinion these have not been effective enough.
