MOST ISAAN PEOPLE have been found to prefer Paetongtarn “Oong-ing” Shinawatra, daughter of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, as head of a post-election government, according to an opinion poll.
The National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA) poll, conducted earlier this month among a total of 2,000 people in 20 northeastern provinces where most of the country’s constituencies are located, has found 36.45% of the respondents supporting Paetongtarn, head of Pheu Thai Family, as prime minister after the next general election.
That compared to 12.65% of the Isaan respondents who preferred Move Forward party leader Pita Limjaroenrat, 10.20% who opted for Thai Sarng Thai party leader Sudarat Keyurapan, 9.85% who preferred Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and 6.50% who picked Thai Liberal party leader Seripisut Temiyavej for head of a post-election government.
Thaksin who is invariably viewed as spiritual leader of the Pheu Thai Party and considerably popular among the Isarn people has pinned high hopes for a “landslide” victory in the next election for MPs, especially those to represent the Isaan constituencies so his partisan followers could set up a post-election government of their own and pave way for his return home from self-exile overseas following the 2006 coup.
Meanwhile, the NIDA poll has found 54.35% of the Isaan respondents preferring to vote for electoral candidates to contest for constituency-based MPs under the tickets of the opposition Pheu Thai Party, compared to 13.60% who opted for those to vie under the banners of the opposition Move Forward Party, 5.60% who preferred those to compete under the tickets of coalition partner Bhumjaithai Party and 5.30% who picked those to contest under the banners of largest coalition partner Palang Pracharath Party.
The NIDA poll has also found 51.40% of the respondents preferred electoral candidates to contest for party-listed MPs under the banners of the Pheu Thai Party, compared to 15.10% who opted for those to run for party-listed MPs under the tickets of the Move Forward Party, 5.35% who picked those to compete under the banners of the Bhumjaithai Party and 5.25% who picked those to vie under the tickets of the Palang Pracharath Party.
