Driving instructor surrenders after killing highway policeman

A DRIVING instructor who fled in fear after his sedan hit and killed a motorcycle-riding highway policeman on Bang Pa-in-Bang Phli stretch of Kanchanapisek expressway has now surrendered to police, Thai Rath newspaper said today (Feb. 24).

Killed in the crash that occurred at 4.30 p.m. yesterday was Pol. Sgt. Setthakan Loykhampom after he flew off his motorcycle upon being hit by the black sedan.

At 8.30 p.m. last night Mr. Kittirat Ranprasert, the driving instructor who killed the policeman in the crash, surrendered to police saying he had fled because he was fearful as there was an unfinished bottle of bear and an e-cigarette in his car.

During the three-hour interrogation he related that he had parked his car by the side of Kanchanapisek expressway to fish in the swamp below.

The highway policeman then showed up because no parking is allowed in this area and asked to search his vehicle. He then tried to drive away to escape penalty if caught with the unfinished bottle of beer and e-cigarette in his car then in panic swerved and hit him.

However police interrogators do not believe what he said and are now collecting evidence to verify what actually happened and whether he had intentionally killed the policeman.

Tests showed that the suspect did not have high alcohol content nor had he taken drugs and he has now been taken to Lam Luk Ka police station for further legal action.

Aside from performing his duties at Highway Patrol 2, sub-division 8, Pol. Sgt. Setthakan also served as convoy driver for National Police Chief Pol. Gen. Damrongsak Kittipraphas and had also been praised for driving an ambulance.
