Move Forward still insists on House Speaker seat

THE MOVE FORWARD STILL INSISTS that the House Speaker seat should belong to the largest elected party, confirmed Move Forward spokesman Rangsiman Rome today (June 17).

Negotiations between Move Forward and Pheu Thai representatives over the top post of the legislative branch may have quietly come to a close with both camps mutually agreeing that it will by no means affect unity of the current eight coalition partners, according to the Move Forward spokesman.

Given the status as the largest elected party following the May 14 election, the Move Forward will almost certainly have a great deal of legislative agenda to put forward at parliament, thus being primarily obliged to take the House Speaker seat, Rangsiman said.

Nonetheless, the Pheu Thai will definitely take one of a couple of Deputy House Speaker posts if the party under de facto boss Thaksin Shinawatra finally gives way for the Move Forward assumption of the House Speaker seat.

A House speaker does not only chair meetings of the House of Representatives but joint House/Senate sessions in the capacity of Parliament President, beginning with the one during which Move Forward leader Pita Limjaroenrat will be named prime minister.

After a minimum of 95% of all MPs-designate has been ratified by the Election Commission, speculated around next Wednesday, the elected lawmakers will convene to pick a House speaker in a couple of weeks and be followed at a one-week interval by the joint House/Senate meeting to vote for head of a post-election government who will need yea votes from more than half the combined total of 500 MPs and 250 senators or at least 376 votes.
