Cabinet nod for unrestricted alcohol sales at Eastern Aviation City’s entertainment zone

THE CABINET today (Aug. 29) approved a draft royal decree setting up an entertainment zone within the Eastern Aviation City being built around U-Tapao Airport in eastern Rayong province where nightclubs will be allowed to stay open all 24 hours and no restriction imposed on sale of alcohol, Matichon newspaper said.

Ms. Traisulee Trisoranakul, deputy spokesperson for the Prime Minister’s Office, said this is to ensure that the entertainment zone is established in an systematic manner to maintain peace and order for Rayong people and is in line with Eastern Economic Corridor Policy Committee permitting privileges to promote the Eastern Aviation City.

The entertainment zone is to take up 2,662 rai of land from a total 6,500 rai set aside for the city. While alcohol will flow freely without restriction, tight control will be maintained.

This draft decree is in line with an amendment of a ministerial regulation published in the Royal Gazette last Friday (Aug. 25) allowing entertainment venues within this city to stay open all 24 hours.

This scheme is part of Thailand’s plan to boost growth on a coastal strip between Bangkok and Pattaya, known as the Eastern Economic Corridor.

As well as the plan to expand U-Tapao Airport, there will be schemes to expand Don Meuang and  Suvarnabhumi airports with all three to be linked by a high-speed railway, Global Construction Review said.
