Foreigner crashes into cable-laying workers killing one of them

ON THE first night of pubs and bars being allowed to stay open till 4 a.m. a foreigner driving a sedan crashed into workers laying underground cables around Chiang Mai moat killing one of them and injuring two others just as these night venues were closing, MNG Online and Naewna newspaper said this afternoon (Dec. 16).

A test showed the unidentified foreigner had 121 milligrammes per decilitre (mg/dL) of alcohol in his blood, far higher than the legal limit of 50 mg/dL.

Police have charged him with both drink-driving and recklessness leading to the death and injury of others.

At around 4 a.m. the foreign man slammed his sedan at workers laying underground cables around Chiang Mai moat on Kotchasarn road leading to a man being killed on the spot while others, a man and a woman, were seriously injured.

When police and rescuers arrived at the accident spot, they found the foreigner sitting by the road side waiting for them.

Rescuers quickly rushed the woman with injured left arm and leg to Bangkok Hospital Chiang Mai. The surviving man was given cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and taken to Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital.

Preliminary investigation shows that the foreign driver was coming at a high speed when he hit the workers.

As of last night, all entertainment spots in the premises of hotels in all the provinces nationwide may legally open until 4 a.m.

Nevertheless, the extended opening hours of entertainment venues outside the premises of hotels is only allowed in Bangkok and four provinces with major tourist spots while all others elsewhere have not been granted this extension.

Entertainment spots in the capital, Phuket, Chiang Mai, Chonburi which geographically covers Pattaya and Samui Island off Surat Thani, either within the premises of hotels or without, may now legally open till 4 a.m.
