THERE were 339 accidents leading to 34 fatalities and 335 people being injured yesterday (Dec. 29) the first day of the New Year holidays, Amarin TV said today.
The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation’s Road Safety Centre said on the first day of the “Drive safely – Thailand without accidents” campaign most of the accidents occurred in Khon Kaen, totalling 24, with this northeastern province also recording the most injuries, adding up to 23, while the four fatalities in Prachinburi province were the highest death toll of the day.
The main cause of accidents was speeding, 39.23%, followed by drink driving, 23.01%.
It was motorcycles that were involved in most accidents, totalling 86%.
Most accidents occurred on straight roads, 86.43%, with 41% occurring on highways followed by 32.45% on subdistrict and village roads.
It was between 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. that the highest number, 8.13%, was recorded.
Additionally, most casualties occurred among people in the 20-29 age group, totalling 20.05%.
Altogether 1,775 main checkpoints have been set up with 51,636 officials manning them.
