New Year road toll climbs to 71 on second day

 

WITH just two of seven dangerous days of New Year holidays having passed, as many as 71 people have died in traffic accidents with 37 fatalities occurring yesterday (Dec. 30), TV Channel 7 said.

Moreover 404 people got injured in 385 accidents yesterday, with two key causes being speeding, 34.55%, and drink driving, 22.60%.

Majority of the accidents involved motorcycles, adding up to 85.29%, and most of them also took place on straight roads, 80.52%, with 38.44% occuring on highways and 35.32% on subdistrict and village roads.

It was from 6.01 p.m. to 7 p.m. when most of these road mishaps happened, amounting to 9.61%.

Additionally, most casualties occurred among people in the 20-29 age group, totalling 20.63%. Tak had the most accidents yesterday, totalling 18, as well as the highest number of injuries, also 18. Bangkok’s four fatalities was the day’s highest toll.

Altogether 1,774 main checkpoints have been set up with 51,408 officials manning them.

Over the two days there were 724 accidents with 739 people being injured and 71 deaths but 37 provinces did not have any road fatalities.

It was Khon Kaen and Tak provinces where most of the injuries occurred at 30 each while Bangkok and Prachinburi recorded the highest number of deaths at five each. Most accidents have also taken place at Khon Kaen, reaching 31.
