ONE OF two activists who have been on hunger strike for nine days after being placed on an initial 12-day detention following their arrest for honking their car horn at a royal motorcade on Feb. 4 was rushed to Thammasat Hospital from the Corrections Department Hospital after her condition deteriorated, Amarin TV said this afternoon (Feb.22).
A friend of Ms. Tantawan Tuatulanond, or Tawan, 22, who together with Mr. Natthanon Chaimahabud, or Frank, 23, have been on hunger strike these nine days after being charged with violating Section 116 of the Criminal Code, which carried a penalty of seven years’ imprisonment for sedition, posted a message on her Facebook page that she was unable to see her at the Corrections Department Hospital as they had rushed her to Thammasat Hospital.
Frank is still at Corrections Department Hospital as is a third member of the Thalu Wang Group Ms. Netiporn Sanaesangkom, or Bung, 28, who was jailed for one month on Jan. 26 for contempt of court over a scuffle with the guards during a demonstration outside Southern Bangkok Criminal Court on Oct. 19, 2023 held to show support for another activist jailed for lese majeste that day.
Tawan’s lawyer who saw her early this morning said she looked very weak and tired, was no longer excreting and only urinating a little, so thin that her collar and chest bones are now visible and there are dark circles under her eyes.
The lawyer added that Tawan confirmed she is continuing her hunger strike until her three demands are met with these being:
– Reform the justice system;
– No one be jailed for having a different opinion;
– Thailand’s candidature for the UN Human Rights Council 2025-2027 term be rejected.
