THE FIERCE fighting in Myawaddy district, across the border from Thailand’s Mae Sot district, between ethnic minority fighters and Myanmar junta soldiers holding out near the 2nd Thai-Myanmar Friendship after their base fell earlier this month has begun to affect Thais with bullets flying across the border and one hitting a resident’s window, Naewna newspaper and Amarin TV said this afternoon (Apr. 20)
Heavy clashes broke out at 6 a.m. this morning around 1.5km from Ban Wang Takien, Tha Sai Luat subdistrict, Mae Sot district, after Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) and their allies launched an attack on approximately 200 Tatmadaw Infantry Battalion 275 and front section of Light Infantry Battalion 44 soldiers who had fled and encamped there after their Pha Song base fell on Apr. 11.
Thais in this border area are now being impacted by the fighting in Myawaddy as bullets are flying across the border with one hitting the window screen at Mrs. Kham Ratsadornthai’s house in Ban Wang Takien.
They can also hear non-stop gunfire as fighting continues but fortunately no one has been injured on the Thai side so far.
Thai officials have closed this bridge with Ratchamanu Special Unit moving additional soldiers and weapons there according to the response plan to ensure the safety of the people in this border area.
