DEPUTY Prime Minister-cum-Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said upon getting ready to go to Mae Sot district, which is directly opposite Myawaddy where Karen National Union (KNU) and their allies and Myanmar junta have been fighting, that it is unlikely the clashes will spill over to the Thai side, TV Channel 7 said today (Apr. 23)
Anutin was assigned by Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin to accompany Deputy Prime Minister-cum-Foreign Minister Parnpree Bahiddha-nukara on this trip. He will be looking at the assistance given to the victims of this fighting, both Myanmar citizens and Thais, while Panpree will be looking into the stability of bilateral relations.
The Interior Minister said people close to the fighting are constantly informed about the situation across the border and right now no Thai dares to go to Myawaddy.
He also urged people to not worry about either warring side chasing each other into Thai territory with this seen to be impossible as it would infringe on Thai sovereignty.
He is also confident no weapons will be brought into Thailand because if this happens those doing so would be adversely impacted.
This is a conflict in their country, it is not an international conflict, and as Thailand is taking care of their people they should not do anything to us, he added.
Thailand must provide assistance to fellow human beings based on humane principles but those crossing over to seek shelter have to be supervised.
When the situation returns to normal these people will return and there is nothing to worry about, the Interior Minister said.
