Police rushing to expand probe after 14-year-old boy was caught smuggling drugs

THE Narcotics Suppression Bureau is quickly further investigating the use of juveniles as drug couriers after a 14-year-old boy was caught smuggling 5.6 million methamphetamine pills in Chiang Mai, Sanook.com said today (May 5).

At 3 p.m. yesterday, Pol. Lt. Gen. Kirisak Tantinwachai, commander of the Narcotics Suppression Bureau, along with Pol. Maj. Gen. Adis Charoensawat, head of the bureau’s third division, and other police officers went to the spot where the drug was seized from the unnamed teenager at 3 a.m. the same day.

The teenager has been detained as police quickly expand investigation with Pol. Lt. Gen. Kirisak saying the suspect’s behaviour indicates that he is linked to a major drug network in this area and while he was caught, his accomplices managed to escape.

Other members of this big drug gang had previously been arrested with a total of over 14 million meth pills seized from them so far. In two previous drug busts, 6 million meth pills were seized towards the end of last year and approximately 5 million at the beginning of this year.

After each big drug bust, this drug network changes its tactics and brings in new members which is something they do continuously.

Pol. Lt. Gen. Kirisak added that he is now rushing to work out new measures in chasing these drug traffickers with this necessitating studying additional goals and updating information.

This drug gang is now deliberately recruiting youths and women as drug couriers with teenagers being easy to influence while both groups charge less for smuggling drugs.

In handling juvenile suspects it is necessary to bring in agencies in charge of youths to help take care of them with legal action against this young suspect starting in 24 hours.
