THE Criminal Court approved bail for a hunger-striking activist who had been arrested together her colleague on charges of violating Section 116 of the Criminal Code and the Computer Crime Act B.E. 2550 (2007) for honking their car horn at a royal motorcade on Feb. 4, Thai Rath and Naewna newspapers said last evening (May 27).
Ms.Tantawan Tuatulanond, or Tawan, and Mr. Natthanon Chaimahabud, or Frank, have been detained for 104 days during which she went on a hunger strike and was admitted to Thammasat Chaloem Phra Kiat Hospital on May 15, soon after another woman activist, Netiporn ‘”Bung” Sanesangkhom, charged in a lese majeste lawsuit died during detention at a Bangkok prison after being on hunger strike for 110 days.
Natthanon too has been admitted to Thammasat Chaloem Phra Kiat Hospital .
The court set the bail for Tantawan’s temporary one-month release at 100,000 baht during which she has to wear an electronic bracelet because the case doctor said she is in critical condition and could die.
She has to report to the court after the one-month is up.
The Thai Lawyers for Human Rights said they were checking whether there is any other case against her and if not she would be immediately released.
Natthanon’s lawyer will continue to apply for his release on bail.
At least 41 detainees faced with the lese majeste charges have so far been denied access to release under bail.
