TURNING into a heated issue on Thai social media is the revelation by a popular influencer that police had demanded 1,000 baht for petrol to drive up and investigate a burglary at her relative’s house, Naewna newspaper and Amarin TV said last night (April 5).
The influencer, “Moofern” whose Tiktok account is @mooferrrn_moomob and has around 1.6 million followers, said the burglary occurred at her relative’s house in Ubon Ratchathani province which is just 11 kilometres away from Muang Sam Sip police station.
Yet when her aunt called to report the incident, with the burglars having made a large hole in the wall and stolen cash, the officer on duty allegedly said, “Oil is expensive. If you want us to come, you have to give us 1,000 baht for oil.”
She also quoted the police officer as saying that a foreigner whose house was also recently burglared paid them 1,000 baht for petrol to go there and investigate.
This incident deeply saddened the victims, who questioned why ordinary citizens could not even turn to the police, their last resort, under current economic conditions as they are unreliable.
The Ubon Ratchathani Provincial Police are currently investigating the incident after the TikTok user’s video, https://vt.tiktok.com/ZSHSB6kow/, has spread across various social media platforms.
The provincial police clarified that they have instructed the Superintendent of Muang Sam Sip police station to investigate the facts immediately. It is believed to be a misunderstanding and miscommunication and that they will expedite the investigation to catch the burglars. They confirmed that all police stations under the Ubon Ratchathani Provincial Police have sufficient fuel for performing their duties and assure the public that all cases in their jurisdiction will be handled without discrimination.
However Moofern immediately responded by saying that Muang Sam Sip police station should just apologise and if they had done that the issue would be over by now and that they should stop blaming the victims and siding with each other in covering up the wrongdoing.
“Who can the public rely on then? Police work is about finding the truth, not running away from it. But if they keep denying it, the audio recordings are waiting to be heard,” she said.
