Sudarat dares Pheu Thai to promise to not scrap party-list mode

By Thai Newsroom Reporters

THAI SANG THAI LEADER Sudarat Keyuraphan today (June 24) dared the core coalition partner Pheu Thai to promise to the public that they will by no means push for an end to party-list mode in a future election.

Sudarat was quickly responding to today’s phenomenon in which members of the Pheu Thai rank and file have concertedly dismissed criticism that the core coalition partner would initiate amendment to the constitution and its organic law pertaining to the election for MPs to the extent the party-list mode be longer applied and only the constituency-based mode be maintained in the next election.

That is primarily allegedly designed to trim down the anticipated, sustained popularity of the Move Forward following last year’s election in which the reformist camp had won most of the total 100 party-listed MPs.

Sudarat dared the Pheu Thai to come up with sort of a social contract to never push for an end to the party-list mode amidst unconfirmed hearsay that de facto Pheu Thai boss Thaksin Shinawatra had already contemplated having the coup junta-designed charter and its organic law amended to the extent that it be terminated once and for all.

Nevertheless, Thaksin was alleged to have concluded that the only way to outdo the Move Forward in the next election is simply to deny the party-list mode with which “Big House” powers and money could not cope.

The Thai Sang Thai leader has earlier commented that Thaksin had paid informal visits to “Big House” elements in the provinces representing the Pheu Thai and other current coalition partners with alleged intent to restore and promote their popularity and powers so they could eventually win the next race to parliament and join ranks with his camp as had been the case in last year’s setup of the Pheu Thai-led government.

In Thai political jargon, “Big House” refers to families of powerful, famous partisan figures who may have been or are currently members of cabinet, MPs, provincial administrative heads or mayors, among other influential positions in the provinces.

Sudarat pointed out the Pheu Thai had evidently double-crossed the Move Forward with whom they had originally formed a post-election alliance and finally dumped the reformist party in a surprise shenanigan to join ranks with his former enemies, namely the Palang Pracharath led by former deputy prime minister Prawit “Uncle Pom” Wongsuwan and the Ruam Thai Sang Chart under de facto party boss/former prime minister Prayut “Uncle Tu” Chan-o-cha.

The Pheu Thai had earlier vowed to the people during their electoral campaigns to never join hands with the “uncles’ camps” to set up a post-election government but Thaksin’s camp finally did the opposite, the Thai Sang Thai leader said.
