A PREDAWN fire that gutted 30 shops at a plaza next to Airport Rail Link ‘s Ramkhamhaeng Station led to its closure from 4.30 onwards but it was reopened at 8.29 a.m., Naewna newspaper said today (July 1).
Although this station is operating again, passengers have to climb stairs because the escalators are not yet working.
Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt reached the scene of fire at 5.30 a.m. and urged officials to investigate the cause and ensure passenger safety.
He added that he was jogging in the Yaowarat area when the fire broke out and that was why was able to come to inspect the damage quickly.
Only shops on the ground floor of the three-floor plaza, about four metres away from the station, have been damaged in this fire.
As most of the shops were selling garments and fabric, firemen cut off the electricity before spraying jets of water, taking 20 minutes to put it out.
A convenience store employee at the scene said he smelled something burning at 4.30 a.m. and at first thought it was a short circuit so rush to check the circuit box at the back of the shop but there was nothing wrong.
He then went outside and saw fire and smoke billowing at the plaza’s ground floor so sprayed an extinguisher to put it out but upon failing to do so called the firemen in.
