IN KEEPING with the goal of turning Thailand into an aviation hub and handle increased number of Chinese tourists Aeronautical Radio of Thailand Ltd (Aerothai) is moving to double handling capacity as it is expected that there will be a huge jump to 2 million fights a year landing here by 2038, Thai Rath newspaper said this morning (July 8).
Deputy Transport Minister Surapong Piyachoti said he instructed Aerothai to speed up expansion of its capacity to support an increased number of flights amid expectation that as many as 2 million flights a year will be landing at Thai airports by 2038.
Mr. Pichet Kunathammarak, chairman of Aerothai’s board, said preparations had been made to install a parallel air traffic flow management system which will increase handling capacity to 200,000 flights a year from 100,000 flights a year at present.
Thailand and China permanently waived visa requirements for each other’s citizens from March this year with this leading to flights from China now accounting for 20% of the total landing at Thai airports.
