PM vows to accept court verdict over impeachment case

By Thai Newsroom Reporters

PRIME MINISTER SRETTHA Thavisin today (July 30) pledged to wholeheartedly accept a verdict of the Constitutional Court scheduled for the middle of next month over an impeachment lawsuit filed against him.

Srettha told reporters at Government House that he will by no means question the Constitutional Court’s final ruling to be delivered on Aug. 14, no matter if it may be favourable to him or not.

However, the Pheu Thai-attached prime minister has today submitted to the court a final, written affidavit to defend himself over the impeachment case.

Srettha has been accused by 40 former senators of perpetrating a severe beach to the constitution and code of political ethics by naming Pichit Chuenban, a former lawyer previously hired by de facto Pheu Thai boss Thaksin Shinawatra, a minister attached to the Prime Minister’s Office despite his having been earlier convicted by court for contempt of the Supreme Court and sentenced to six months in prison.

The former senior lawmakers maintained that the prime minister could have been well aware of the former lawyer’s stigma caused by lack of professional integrity and proven dishonesty and that the contentious act on the part of the prime minister was an irreversible fait accompli for which he could possibly be impeached by court.

If finally guilty as charged, Srettha, quietly pushed to power by Thaksin’s sister/former prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra, could possibly be deprived of his prime-ministerial status in immediate fashion.

Srettha contended that he had consulted with the Council of State over the legality of the contentious naming of Pichit as the portfolioless minister who finally resigned under pressure.

The billionaire, powerful de facto Pheu Thai boss said he considered the impeachment case against the prime minister no cause for serious concern since, Thaksin pointed out, Srettha’s act had been entirely committed in “transparent, honest” fashion.
