RESIDENTS of a village in northern Mae Hong Son province urgently need help after landslides triggered by two days of torrential rain demolished their homes and blocked the road, Naewna newspaper said today (Aug. 13).
Mr. Phachat Chomchodee, a resident of Mae Gopi village, in Khun Yuam district, said around 400 villagers urgently need food and drinking water after landslides heavily damaged their homes and blocked the road leading to the village.
Fortunately the villagers were able to escape in time and no one got injured.
Around 40 students who climbed higher up the mountain from the school to escape the landslides were all safely rescued and brought back to the village after missing their evening meal.
The torrential rain continued this morning with there being more landslides that have damaged many rice fields as well as five rice barns plus three buffalos and other farm animals are missing.
The villagers were not able to communicate with the outside world as their phones could not catch signals but today they were able to make phone calls from mountain peaks.
A 17-kilometre road from Mae Kopi to neighbouring Mae Yuam Noi village is now impassable to traffic.
