Department warns tourists not to buy a driving licence from illegal websites

THE Land Transport Department warned foreign tourists to not buy a driving licence from websites illegally selling them as they risk losing their property and documents with action taken after a Facebook post falsely boasted that a Chinese woman who did not know how to drive had got one with the help of an agent, Naewna newspaper said today (Sept. 1).

This Facebook post shared a photo of the Chinese woman’s diving licence with the caption: “She lives in Chiang Mai and got a Thai driving licence even though she never learnt how to drive. She just paid an agent to help her get the Thai permit.”

The Land Transport department said it has investigated this matter and found that the Chinese tourist did come to apply for a driving licence at the Chiang Mai Provincial Land Transport Office and followed the legal procedures and regulations.

As for the image shared on this Facebook page, the department said the owner posted it without getting permission from the woman tourist.

The Chinese woman has now filed a complaint with the police against this Facebook page owner. She stated that she had followed all the procedures and regulations including passing a physical fitness test and completing a training course and did not buy this licence from an agent.

The department warned tourists not to be taken in by websites offering to get them a driving licence as these would be fake and they would risk losing their property and documents. These illegal websites post a photo of the Land Transport Department’s logo to convince unsuspecting tourists.

They falsely advertise that they can get a driving licence issued or renewed without having to go to the department but charge a much higher fee.

Those who want a Thai driving licence have to come to the department personally to apply for one and go through a physical fitness test, undergo theoretical training and after completing the driving course and passing a test they will get one with the fee for a motorcycle licence being 105 and a car 205 baht.
