AFTER 20 armed insurgents attacked a wildlife sanctuary in Narathiwat and stole 10 shotguns and burnt down four buildings, they set off two bombs as rangers were inspecting the area in an attempt to ambush and kill them, Thai Rath newspaper said this afternoon (Sep. 22).
At 9 a.m. this morning a meeting was held at the 11th Ranger Forces Regiment headquarters with the commander, Maj. Gen. Chalermporn Khamkhieo, presiding over it for a briefing on the attack at Hala-Bala Wildlife Sanctuary in Waeng district last evening where four houses were burnt by insurgents who had tied up four officials and used an improvised explosive device to blast a safe and steal 10 shotguns.
Soon after Maj. Gen. Chalermporn sent a unit of rangers accompanied with some Explosive Ordnance Disposal officers and trained dogs to inspect two sides of a road leading to this sanctuary, one explosive went off at 10:03 a.m. and another at 11.03 a.m.
It is likely that the insurgents had planted and set off the bombs to ambush and kill the rangers going in to inspect the sanctuary but no one was hurt.
