Elephants brave floodwaters to deliver supplies to flood victims

A FAMOUS monk at a temple in Chiang Mai sent elephants wading through floodwaters to deliver supplies to flood victims stranded in an area inaccessible by boats and vehicles yesterday (Oct. 6), Amarin TV said.

The much-needed and useful work done by the elephants was shared by Facebook user Sandy Aloha who wrote, “Most recently, Chiang Mai sent elephants to help deliver supplies to flood victims. They are elephants that Phra Khru Odd takes care of. Their names are Saen and Saen Thap. Even though a six-wheeled truck couldn’t get in, elephants still made the delivery. Someone called Saen Thap. He turned around and greeted them back. It was so cute that it hurt.”

Should people be worried about the elephants stepping on sharp objects, be it nails or pipes, and injuring themselves, Sandy added that from what she saw they were walking in the middle of the road with their mahouts as well as some rescuers with them.

Phra Khru Ott at Chiang Mai’s Wat Chedi Luang had brought the elephants from Saen Elephant Family Home in Mae Taeng district to help flood victims living along Ton Yang road in Saraphi district because this area is cut off by severe floods but the elephants braved the currents and managed to reach them.

This mission was carried out in collaboration with the flood relief team and Phra Khru Ott’s volunteer rescue team.

Phra Khru Ott said using elephants this way is akin to training them to help the society and in times of crisis such as the current one is something Saen Family of Elephants could carry out.
