THE Shia leader for Thailand today (Oct. 30) submitted a letter to Parliament President/House Speaker Wan Muhamad Noor Matha asking for an investigation of Special Branch police at Suvarnabhumi Airport who allegedly threatened students returning from Iran, TV Channel 7 said.
Mr. Chaiyid Sulaiman Hussainy, Thailand’s Shia leader, said in the letter accepted by Wan Noor’s secretary Mr. Muk Sulaiman that last Friday (Oct. 25) a group of Thai students returning from Iran were detained and thoroughly searched without reasonable cause.
He alleged that the students were questioned in a manner that implied an intention to pressure them and raised undue doubts even though they have the freedom to peacefully return home.
He added that this is not the first time this has occurred with the police having allegedly done this several times with special focus on Thai students returning from Iran.
Such behaviour clearly creates fear and has a psychological impact on the students, he said, adding it is leading to a sense of insecurity among Thais travelling to Iran, a country with which Thailand has good relations.
Chaiyid warned that policemen acting in this manner violated human rights principles and this also may affect the relations between the two countries.
Mr. Areepen Uttarasin, adviser House speaker, said Chaiyid is an important person because he is the coordinator over the detention of Thai students overseas and has helped with the unrest in the Far South.
His complaint will be submitted to Wan Noor who in turn will forward it to the relevant committees, he added.
