SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY manager Danny Rohl would likely stay put with the sitting-pretty Owls in the Championship rather than venture into the Premier League to salvage the poorly-performing Southampton anytime soon, according to news reports.
Though Rohl has reportedly held private talks with representatives of Southampton, which are embarrassedly stuck at the bottom of the 20-team table of the Premier League struggling for survival in the top tier of the English football system, the German manager would rather choose to stay in charge of the Owls, given prevalent odds of the Saints likely to be eventually relegated to the second-tier Championship by the end of current season.
The noteworthy event in which Rohl was considerably tempted to leave the Owls and come to the Saints’ rescue as soon as the transfer market opens next month closely followed news reports that Dejpon Chansiri, the Thai owner of Sheffield Wednesday, would utterly fail to provide sufficient money for the planned strengthening of the Owls squad by buying some promising players from other clubs in the Championship, let alone those in the Premier League.
Sentiment around Hillsborough stadium has been divided among Sheffield Wednesday fans and supporters since some shared the Owls’ ultimate goal to finish in the top six on the 24-team Championship table to qualify for play-off promotion to the Premier League whilst others were simply content with the second tier as far as Chansiri’s shallow pockets were concerned.
Rohl who is currently ranking among four favourites to become the new boss of the reeling Southampton replacing the recently-sacked Russell Martin would be more or less convinced that Chansiri could probably only offer to land some players on loan from other clubs, including one or two from the Premier League, since the Owls owner would probably not have enough money to buy a single one on permanent basis.
In the meantime, Sheffield Wednesday are currently sitting pretty at ninth standing on the Championship table with eight wins, five draws and eight losses so far this season, justifying to some extent the Owls manager’s possible departure for which the Saints would be obliged to deliver five million pounds in compensation pay.
Rohl who once worked as a staff coach for Southampton was more or less anticipated to have the ultimate potential to keep the Saints from being relegated to the Championship from where they had been promoted in a play-off final to the Premier League last season.
Given the fact that Southampton have ostensibly fared very poorly with only one win, two draws and 13 losses out of 16 games so far this season, the Sheffield Wednesday manager was standing out as a potential new Saints boss apart from the likes of Carlos Corberan, the Spaniard manager of West Bromwich Albion, one of the Owls’ rivals in the Championship, Ivan Juric, the Croatian who was most recently in charge of Italy’s Serie A club Roma, and Kasper Hjulmand, a former head coach of the Denmark national team.
