Navy rescues 6 foreign kayakers off Koh Chang

THE THAI navy’s Marine Safety Centre at Koh Chang rescued six tourists after one kayak capsized and another almost followed suit today (Jan. 5) with all of them safe and only one suffering a minor injury, Naewna newspaper said.

At around 12.30 p.m. a kayak four Czech tourists were paddling in the area between Koh Yok and Koh Suwan islands capsized after being hit by strong waves. Someone saw them struggling in the sea and alerted the centre which quickly sent a team on a boat to help them.

All four were safely rescued with only one sustaining a minor injury.

While bringing these four tourists back to the shore, the rescue team saw two Russian tourists paddling their kayak to Koh Suwan to avoid the strong waves and winds and they too were rescued and brought back to the shore at 2.30 p.m.

The four Czech tourists returned to the boat they had arrived on while the Russians went to their hotel on Koh Chang.

The Marine Rescue Centre said the tourists went sightseeing on their kayaks but were unfamiliar with the area and did not know waves are currently strong and they could have been swept away. Tourists are warned to always check the weather conditions before going out to sea and wear life jackets as well as strictly follow safety measures.
