Army moves to defuse tension after another row erupts at ancient temple

AFTER another heated argument broke out at Prasat Ta Muen Thom temple on the border at Phanom Dong Rak district, Surin province, today (Feb. 25) with this time it was a Thai guide who traded barbs with Cambodian soliders,  the 2nd Army Region commander urged netizens to stop sharing a video clip showing Cambodian troops singing their national anthem there because this is an old one from before 2011, Naewna newspaper said.

The new row followed a heated exchange between Thai and Cambodian soldiers after a group of Cambodian soldiers and civilians were filmed singing their national anthem at this temple earlier this month with this clip going viral online.

Suranaree Task Force said today’s row occurred when some Thai troops accompanied a group of tourists from Bangkok in touring this temple with a guide using a megaphone stating that this temple lies in no man’s land and is guarded by soldiers from both countries.

Cambodian soldiers then stepped in and told the guide to stop using the megaphone with this leading to a confrontation between the two groups, and while Thai soldiers tried to explain, it almost led to a clash.

Someone filmed this confrontation and shared the clip online and it was liked 3,400 times, with there being 812 comments and 582 shares.

To resolve this problem and prevent it from happening again in future Suranaree Task Force has now assigned military guides to escort and brief all Thai tourists at this temple.

A little later Lt. Gen. Boonsin Phadklang, the 2nd Army Region commander, explained that another video clip showing Cambodian soldiers singing their national anthem at this temple is an old one from before 2011 with the current border situation being normal and the public urged to not share this old clip as it may cause misunderstanding,

He added that he does not want this sort of thing to happen again because it may lead to a war between the two countries and it is people living on the border who would be affected the most.
