Newin’s son airs dissent to Pheu Thai-designed casino bill

By Thai Newsroom Reporters

BHUMJAITHAI SECRETARY-GENERAL/MP Chaichanok Chidchob today (Apr. 9) took the House floor to say he ultimately disagrees with the questionable Pheu Thai legislation to open casinos anywhere in Thailand.

Chaichanok made his rare, resolute comments at parliament in the wake of concerted opposition by varied sectors of society to the highly contentious bill put forward by the Pheu Thai to open casinos under the name of entertainment complex projects in certain tourist spots.

Those anti-casino critics invariably deem it as a root of vice and evil whilst Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and the rank and file of the largest ruling party have contended that it was primarily designed to draw an increased number of foreign visitors to the country and generate immense tourism-related earnings.

“I, Chaichanok Chidchob, the eldest son of Newin and Karuna Chidchob and secretary-general of the Bhumjaithai, will ultimately never agree (to legislation) to open casinos or any similar legislations including those which may be filed by the Bhumjaithai,” declared the MP of Buriram in the middle of the House chamber, referring to the second-largest coalition partner under discreet influence of his father as the de facto Bhumjaithai boss.

Chaichanok’s comments closely followed the last-minute aboutface by Paetongtarn’s father/de facto Pheu Thai boss Thaksin Shinawatra to have legislation to open casinos under the name of entertainment complexes indefinitely postponed from the current House session which is going into recess from the upcoming weekend.

Today’s House meeting focused on an urgent motion for the elected lawmakers to consider regional natural disasters such as recent earthquakes epicentred in Myanmar which have adversely affected Thailand and US President Donald Trump’s reciprocal tariffs issue considerably impacting exports of Thai goods to the superpower country.
