BHUMJAITHAI MP Ekarat Changlao has been today (April 17) sentenced by court to multiple terms in prison on charges of embezzlement and forged documentation pertaining to finances of the Khon Kaen Teachers Savings Cooperative.
The Khon Kaen Provincial Court today ruled the Bhumjaithai MP of the northeastern province guilty of embezzling money from the savings cooperative and forging relevant documents and sentenced him to five years and 93 months in jail.
Besides, Ekarat was ordered by court to pay the savings cooperative a sum of 405 million baht in relation to the embezzled money plus interest.
However, it remains to be seen whether the elected lawmaker may be released under bail as soon as today and proceed to fight the legal battle in the Appeals Court at a later date.
If Ekarat was eventually denied bail, a by-election in Constituency 4 of Khon Kaen where he currently represents at parliament would be held in a 60-day time to find a new MP in his place.
