ANOTHER construction accident occurred on Rama II road soon after midnight last night with a cable falling on a trailer truck and a pickup truck loaded with seafood from overhead construction stretch causing severe damage to both vehicles but no injuries, Naewna newspaper said today (May 6).
The accident occurred near central Mahachai, Samut Sakhon province, at 1.05 a.m. with the driver of the pickup truck, which was loaded with seafood from Thai Talay market for delivery in Bangkok, saying he was following the trailer truck when the cable suddenly snapped and fell from above construction area.
It first hit the trailer truck then the front of his vehicle with great force causing the front grille and licence plant to come off. The front of the vehicle was also severely damaged.
He added that fortunately he did not get injured but he was shocked by this incident and questioned the safety of construction. He asked relevant agencies to come and resolve this problem including considering the cause of frequent accidents on this road.
Construction workers said they had switched on a rotating machine to spin the cable above and had already inserted it to the hook but felt that the concrete platform caused it to somersault down. This coincided with the two vehicles reaching this point just then being hit, Amarin TV said.
This is considered negligence that caused damage to property with the contractor agreeing to pay for all damages.
On April 29 an engineer suffered a ruptured liver and later died after two chunks of concrete fell on his pickup truck as he was passing beneath a flyover on Rama II road to Samut Sakhon where he worked.
