Thai Army Chief offers condolences over death of Cambodian soldier in Chong Bok clash

THAI ARMY Commander Gen. Pana Klaewplodthuk offered condolences over the death of a Cambodian soldier during a brief clash at an overlapping area in Chong Bok, Ubon Ratchathani province, yesterday morning (May 28) during a meeting with Cambodian Army Commander Gen. Mao Sophan with the latter saying troops who violated orders will be moved out of this zone and that Cambodia has absolute authority over all military units, Naewna newspaper said this evening (May 29}.

Maj. Gen. Winthai Suvari, the army spokesman, said at the Thai army headquarters that Gen. Pana and his team travelled to Chong Chom permanent border crossing, Dan subdistrict, Kap Choeng district, Surin province, to meet and hold talks with his Cambodian counterpart on the situation along the border.

This followed their video teleconference discussion yesterday.

In offering his condolences Gen. Pana emphasized the importance of the intention of the defence ministers of both countries to negotiate an end to the conflict.

He confirmed there would be no invasion of Cambodia’s sovereignty nor conflicts over sovereignty. The negotiation will benefit the people of both countries, especially in terms of economy.

Regarding the Chong Bok clash, the Thai and Cambodian armies agreed to use the Joint Boundary Committee (JBC) mechanism to resolve the issue. The results of JBC meetings are expected within two weeks. Troops from both sides who clashed have been moved out of this area as a means to reduce tension.

Both sides also agreed to use the Regional Border Committee (RBC) mechanism to resolve any remaining doubts and further develop JBC to be more complete.

The meeting between the army commanders of the two neighbouring countries was held in a good atmosphere with an agreement struck to move the troops from the conflict area to their original positions while waiting for the result of the JBC meetings.
