THE THAI army this afternoon (May 31) said closure of Thai-Cambodian border is part of the plan in the event of high risk affecting national security, including use of long-range weapons, but right now there is only a problem in some border areas, Neawna newspaper said.
Maj. Gen. Winthai Suvari, the army spokesman, said rumours had spread that Thailand is preparing to fully close all checkpoints to Cambodia and while this is part of the plan in managing the situation that could affect national security, people’s safety and local agencies at present there is no report of these high risks.
This followed a clash between the troops of the two countries at Chong Bok, Ubon Ratchathani province, in which one Cambodian soldier was killed last Wednesday (May 28).
In the past the border would be closed when truly necessary, that is, highly worrying problems arising that could affect national security, especially people’s safety and use of long-range weapons.
At present the situation is mostly in order with there only being problems in some areas but this is not yet very worrying because both sides have started using local-level mechanisms to settle the issues within the framework of the agreement both parties have strictly adhered to.
