Thailand, Cambodia agree to pull back along border

CAMBODIAN army contacted Thailand’s Suranaree Task Force for negotiations this morning (June 8) and it was agreed that both sides retreat from reinforced border areas to their positions last year with Cambodia also filling the trenches dug at Chong Bok, Ubon Ratchathani province, Naewna newspaper said evening.

After getting the message from Cambodian troops to hold talks at 10 a.m. this morning Suranaree Task Force requested permission from Lt. Gen. Boonsin Phadklang, commander of the 2nd Army, to do so and he in turn got the approval from Army Commander Gen. Pana Klaewplodthuk.

Both sides have now retreated to the agreed positions and officers from both countries will be holding talks at Chong Bok once a week.

After signing an order controlling the opening hours of all border crossings along the Thai-Cambodian border last night (June 7) 2nd Army Commander Lt. Gen. Boonsin considered cutting off electricity supply to Cambodian border areas from nine points in Thailand, TV Channel 7 quoted an army source said saying today.

The 2nd Army Region has been watching and assessing the situation along the border after tension escalated following a clash at Chong Bok, Ubon Ratchathani province, on May 28 that led to one Cambodian soldier being killed.

Lt. Gen. Boonsin planned to order the additional measure of cutting power supply from nine points to Cambodia if the neighbouring country sent more troops to the border. Five of these are under the control of the Army Operations Centre and four the Navy Operations Centre, the source said.

Today, the second day of restricted opening of border crossings, the Thai army was informed that Cambodian people are displeased with this step because they have to quickly complete border trade, having to rush across the border for fear of the checkpoint closing and being stranded on the Thai side.

While Thai traders also had to rush to complete their business, they were happy that the Thai military is taking various steps to protect the country and the safety of the people living along the border.

The nine points from which electricity supply to Cambodia would be cut are as follows:

+ Ban Khlong Luek, Aranyaprathet district, Sisaket province – Poipet district, Banteay Meanchey province with Mineral and Energy Industry Office of Banteay Meanchey province being the electricity buyer;
