CAMBODIA this morning (June 17) switched off electricity supply from Thailand to Poipet border town, opposite Aranyaprathet border town, Sa Kaeo province, and adjacent areas and instead connected a new transmission line for flow of power from Vietnam, Amarin TV said.
At 9 a.m. when the checkpoint was opened, officials from Poipet Electricity Authority of Cambodia proceeded to cut off the flow of electricity from Thailand at two power poles next to Poipet immigration checkpoint.
This led to a blackout for around 20 minutes before power from Vietnam started flowing but many areas still faced problems.
Locals said the Vietnamese power supply is inconsistent with some areas having severe outages, to the point where electrical appliances could not be used normally. Meanwhile, other areas still had no electricity, causing people to suffer.
Thai authorities said Cambodian officials had asked to switch off power supply from Thailand at four points along Ban Khlong Luek, Aranyaprathet, to test flow from within their country at 3 a.m. However, Ayutthaya Power Distribution Control Centre refused to allow this and notified the coordinator to send a written request which has to be sent to the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) first.
However, Poipet officials proceeded to disconnect Thai power flow from two points today – in front of Poipet checkpoint and near the railway bridge which is also in front of the checkpoint.
