TENSION escalated at the Thai-Cambodian border in Sa Kaeo with Khmer villagers armed with sticks and other material marching to the frontline to pressure Thai troops after the provincial governor ordered 170 Cambodian families encroaching on Thai territory to leave, Amarin TV said this morning (Sep. 4).
At 9.50 a.m. the Thai armed forces said on its Facebook page that Khmer villagers living along the border had moved closer to the Thai side at Ban Nong Chan, Non Mak Mun subdistrict, Khok Sung district, upon being encouraged by their soldiers to take action after trilingual (Thai, English, and Khmer) signs were put up warning Cambodians who had encroached on Thai territory to leave the area immediately.
More Thai units have been deployed to this area, including soldiers and border patrol police, to strictly control the situation. They are also patrolling the forest along this strip of the border to prevent violence.
A Sa Kaeo provincial government source said all officials had been instructed to perform their duties calmly, cautiously and with maximum patience. It was emphasised that they should avoid direct confrontation and clashes to prevent the situation from escalating into a conflict.
Meanwhile, Thai residents in Ban Nong Chan and nearby villages are monitoring the situation with concern, fearing for their safety and other impact on their communities.
However so far this morning the situation remained under control as although tension continued in some areas, no clashes or other violence broke out. All parties are closely monitoring the movement of the Cambodian people.
