Illegal Myanmar migrants caught after agreeing to pay steep fee

AFTER agreeing to pay a broker 15,000 to 18,000 baht each for jobs in Thailand a group of 52 illegal Myanmar migrants was arrested in Kanchanaburi last night (Sep. 16) while being transported to their destination, Naewna newspaper said.

Provincial Governor Mr. Athisan Intra and Maj. Gen. Atsawut Panyarachun, commander of 9th Infantry Division and head of Surasee Task Force, said after they were tipped off of the smuggling of some illegal foreign workers from Kanchanaburi border to the interior of the country a combined force from three agencies was sent to investigate.

At 1 a.m. as the unit was patrolling Highway 323, they noticed three vehicles parked near Wat U Long Temple in Tha Khanun subdistrict, Thong Pha Phum district, with some suspicious individuals standing around.

As soon as they approached the vehicles the drivers quickly fled into the jungle with officers then chasing them. A thorough search of this area led to 52 Myanmar nationals, 31 men and 21 women, being rounded up with all of them unable to speak Thai and did not possess official identification documents.

Later upon being questioned through an interpreter, it was learned that they had travelled from Yangon, Myanmar, and illegally entered Thailand through a natural route at  Ban Bo Yipon, Sangkhla Buri district.

They then continued their journey via natural routes, both land and water, to avoid checkpoints and waited at a designated spot for an unidentified person to come with vehicles to take them further inland.

They were heading for Ayutthaya and Surat Thani having agreed to pay a broker 15,000 to 18,000 baht each for arranging jobs for them upon arrival at their destination.

The officers then transferred them to Thong Pha Phum police station for further investigation and legal proceedings.
