FIVE former leaders of the United Front of Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD), commonly called Red Shirts, were released on bail after the Criminal Court on Ratchadapisek road sentenced them along with their associates, totaling 13 defendants, to jail on charges of attempting to oust the government of Abhisit Vejjajiva and storming the home of former prime minister/then president of Privy Council Prem Tinsuland in 2010, Naewna newspaper said late afternoon today (Oct. 7).

The 2010 political protests that took place from March 12 to May 19, 2010 ended with the military violently crushing the protesters leaving more than 80 civilians and six soldiers dead and over 2,100 injured.

Estimates of the number of protesters ranged from 50,000 (by the government) to 300,000 (by the UDD). At the beginning, protests were mostly peaceful, and initially centred at Phan Fa Lilat Bridge, but later moved to Ratchaprasong.
