PRIME MINISTER Anutin Charnvirakul today (Nov. 10) gave the green light for suspending the Thai-Khmer peace accord and lodging an immediate protest after two Thai soldiers got injured in a landmine explosion, TV Channel 7 said.
Mr. Siripong Angkasakulkiat, government spokesperson, said Anutin received a report on a Thai soldier stepping on a landmine in the Huai Ta Maria area of Si Sa Ket province, resulting in two injuries and they have already been taken for medical treatment.
The Prime Minister expressed deep concern and has instructed Foreign Affairs and Defence ministries to submit a protest to the Interim Observer Team (IOT), with this to be pursued to the fullest extent of the law.
Furthermore, Anutin also approved Defence Minister Gen. Nattapol Nakphanit’s request to suspend the implementation of the Thai-Cambodian ceasefire agreement, which was jointly signed in Malaysia, witnessed by US President Donald Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on Oct. 26.
The Prime Minister urged the army and relevant agencies to provide full medical care to the injured and offered support to the personnel operating in the border area, requesting continuous updates.
Gen. Nattapol said the 2nd Army Region Commander suspects that this is a new landmine with this showing that Cambodia does not respect the ceasefire accord signed on Oct 26, Naewna newspaper said.
For this reason he has asked the Prime Minister to temporarily suspend implementation of this agreement.
