FORMER RUAM THAI Sang Chart secretary-general Akanat Prompan today (Dec.15) led a dozen former MPs of the disintegrating camp in an en masse departure for the Bhumjaithai, core of the caretaking coalition government, with intent to seek re-election under the tickets of the ruling party.
Akanat, a former industry minister and ex-MP, brought the ex-Ruam Thai Sang Chart lawmakers including the likes of former social development & human security minister/ex-MP Juti Krairirk and ex-MP Siriwan Praschaksatru in the concerted exodus for the Bhumjaithai under de facto party boss Newin Chidchob.
Those renegade ex-MPs have represented southern constituencies of Surat Thani and Chumporn, a northern constituency of Prae, upper-central constituencies of Pitsanulok and a western constituency of Ratchaburi, plus a few former party-listed MPs.
Other ex-Ruam Thai Sang Chart MPs including those previously elected in party-listed mode are expected to follow suit by leaving their current, disintegrating camp for the Bhumjaithai or the Klatham under de facto party boss/acting Deputy Prime Minister-cum-acting Agriculture & Cooperatives Minister Thammanat Prompao.
However, Ruam Thai Sang Chart leader Pirapan Salirathavibhaga is yet reportedly staying with the ultra-conservative camp previously set up with unsuccessful intent to keep former army chief-turned-coup leader-turned-prime minister Prayut Chan-o-cha in power after the 2023 election.
Meanwhile, former Chart Thai Pattana leader Varawut Silpa-archa also today brought 10 ex-MPs including former Chart Thai Pattana secretary-general Prapat Bhothasuton and himself in an en masse departure for the Bhumjaithai with intent to seek re-election under the banners of Newin’s camp in central constituencies of Supanburi and Nakhon Pathom as well as a northeastern constituency in Roi-et.
Many ex-Pheu Thai MPs mostly representing northeastern and central constituencies are more or less anticipated to follow suit by skipping over to Newin’s camp sooner than later whilst a nationwide election has been tentatively scheduled for Feb.8 following last Thursday’s dissolution of the House of Representatives by Caretaker Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul who concurrently performs as acting interior minister and the Bhumjaithai leader.
Given the defection of prominent figures from varied parties, the Bhumjaithai remarkably aim to get more MPs from party-listed mode in addition to constituency-based mode in the Feb.8 election after they had won only three, namely Anutin, former Bhumjaithai secretary-general/former transport minister Saksayam Chidchob and acting Deputy Interior Minister Songsak Thongsri, in the previous election.
