THE PHEU THAI today (Jan.10) offered to up the ante under the Bhumjaithai-led caretaker government’s resumable copay project if they eventually return to run the country after the Feb.8 general election by raising the government’s copay share to 70% so that the people would only pay 30% of the price of a merchandise.
Addressing a cheering crowd outside the headquarters of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, Pheu Thai electoral campaign director Suriya Juangroongruangkit pledged to increase the government’s share from 50% to 70% of the price of a product or service under the copay project so the recipient would only pay 30% if the neo-conservative/populist party becomes core of a post-election government.
Suriya, a former transport minister and a co-leader of the so-called Sam Mit political faction, is one of a trio of Pheu Thai contestants for prime minister in addition to Yodchanan Wongsawat, nephew of de facto Pheu Thai boss/inmate Thaksin Shinawatra, and party leader Julapun Amornvivat.
Such a campaign promise publicly made by Suriya and others among the Pheu Thai rank and file was apparently designed to raise partisan popularity among prospective voters nationwide with the upgradable copay project earlier implemented by the caretaker coalition government to stimulate domestic consumption.
Caretaker Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has earlier pledged to resume the copay project if he eventually retains his elected premiership following the nationwide election, remarking that he is virtually owing each one of the people 2,400 baht in cash under the populist project, referring to the maximum amount of the giveaway cash which the government may provide for each recipient.
