Debt stress leads to lingerie vendor committing suicide at market stall

A LINGERIE vendor stressed out over financial problems which she blamed on the slow economy hanged herself at her stall in a Trang City market today (Jan. 27), Naewna newspaper and Amarin TV said.

At around 12.30 p.m. Pol. Lt. Col. Taweesak Rodrak, the investigating officer at Trang City police station, was alerted of the tragic death of Ms. Natcharee (surname withheld), or June, 55, at this southern city’s municipal market and quickly rushed to the scene together with a doctor from Trang Hospital and rescue workers from the Kusol Sathan Trang Foundation.

Upon reaching the stall they found the vendor’s body seated on the floor after having used a piece of cloth to hang herself from a clothes hanger. Nearby was an empty bottle of liquor with doctors estimating that she had been dead for approximately two hours.

The first person to discover her was a foreign customer passing by who noticed something unusual and immediately alerted nearby vendors.

Mr. Wichian, 69, the deceased woman’s husband, said that they had been married for three years and throughout that time his wife complained of being stressed about difficult economic conditions that led to her earning only 200 to 300 baht a day, or some days when no sales occurred, none at all.

She also suffered from depression and panic disorder, requiring continuous medication. She frequently said she wanted to kill herself to escape her debts, but he did not know exactly how much she owed creditors.

Ms. Thanya, a close friend, sadly recounted that the deceased had borrowed from multiple sources, including banks, credit cards, and personal loans, totaling hundreds of thousands of baht. Before the incident, they had brunch together around 10 a.m. The deceased complained about the poor economy and inability to sell anything, and Thanya helped out by buying a lingerie item to encourage her.

She never expected her friend to take her own life just hours after they parted.

Initial investigation revealed that the deceased was a native of Bangkok who had moved to Trang to  work several years ago and had run this stall for over five years. As her family did not question the cause of death, the authorities have released her body for funeral.
