A TEAM of soldiers and policemen raided an unlicensed school on Koh Phangan where over a hundred foreign students, among them many from Israel, were studying and also rounded foreign teachers working there without permits, Amarin TV said today (May 2).
Lt. Gen. Norathip Poinok, commander of the 4th Army Region and director of Internal Security Operations Command Region 4, ordered a team of soldiers to join Koh Phangan and Immigration police plus local officials in raiding this unlicensed private school on the popular tourist island.
The school was launched from a licensed daycare centre for no more than 18 children with many foreign children and youths studying there, and among them were as many as 89 Israeli children aged 2-12. In addition, there were 40 Myanmar students and 12 of other nationalities with some of them attempting to flee during the inspection.
Ms. Prathumthip (surname withheld), 61, from Chon Daen district, Phetchabun province, who claimed to be the manager and director of the company operating the school, was arrested. Mr. Aidin, 45, and Ms. Neger, 45, an Iranian couple claiming to be co-owners, were also arrested. All three were charged with employing illegal foreign workers and operating an educational institution without a permit.
Furthermore, six other foreign nationals, including French and South Africans, who appeared to be teachers, were charged with working without permits, failing to notify their employers, and not complying with employment conditions.
Initially, Prathumthip, the director, presented a business permit from the Surat Thani Provincial Social Development and Human Security Office, which stated, “accepting to take care of 18 children aged 2-5 years,” but could not produce the necessary documents for operating a school, while claiming she was in the process of obtaining a licence.
This arrest stems from complaints on social media regarding Israeli nationals engaging in illegal activities that could potentially impact national security in the long run. An investigation was carried out an this raid then mounted.
