Nigerian, Myanmar romance scammers nabbed

By Thai Newsroom Reporters

FOUR NIGERIAN males and a Myanmar male were arrested today on online romance scamming charges in Hua Hin, police said.

The police who acted on tip-offs to the faux romance scams arrested the Nigerian and Myanmar nationals who had allegedly preyed on Thai females, seeking to develop intimate relationships with well-to-do foreigners, said Ranong provincial police commander Pol Maj Gen Phornsak Nuannoo.

The suspected scammers had allegedly used fake identities online and convinced their victims in several provinces including Hua Hin and Ranong into transferring a sum of money each to their bank accounts unsuspecting of the alleged scam, Pol Maj Gen Phornsak said.

The Nigerians had falsely claimed to have sent some gifts and souvenir items from abroad to their victims and told them to transfer some money to them so they could pay for the import tax and other expenses for the non-existent items, he said.

A number of Thai females were believed to have fallen prey to the suspected romance scammers and had a combined loss of no less than 10 million baht.
