Loud blast as 4 utility poles suddenly collapse at Suan Phlu road

RESIDENTS were shaken by the sound of a loud of blast and sparks flying around as four utility poles on Suan Phlu road collapsed in a row this afternoon (Oct. 5), Amarin TV said.

Officials from Metropolitan Electricity Authority and Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, along with officers from Thung Mahamek police station rushed to the scene after these four utility poles suddenly toppled at approximately 1. p.m.

The police team cordoned off the hazardous area and rerouted traffic to ensure safety.

Mr. Sanon Wangsrangboon, deputy Bangkok governor visited the site to monitor the situation, accompanied by Ms. Puangphet Fakathong, assistant director of Sathon district, and Pol. Col. Phanom Chuethong, superintendent of Thung Mahamek police station. All relevant agencies coordinated efforts to resolve the issue and ensure the safety of the public and road users.

Uncle A (pseudonym) recounted that at the time of the incident, a car happened to drive past the area without making any contact with the power lines. Subsequently, the utility poles began to lean and tilt before collapsing in a chain reaction.

Sparks and explosion-like sounds accompanied the collapse, startling local residents.  While the area where Uncle A is located did not experience a blackout, power was cut specifically at the spot of the pole collapse.

The exact cause of these poles toppling remains unknown, and officials are currently conducting a thorough investigation.

However, heavy rain and strong winds had hit the area prior to the incident, which may be contributing factors but official findings from relevant agencies are still pending.

The electricity authority team and relevant agencies are now clearing trees and removing the fallen poles as quickly as possible. Meanwhile, police from the Thung Mahamek station have deployed officers to ensure safety and manage traffic, aiming to restore normalcy to the area as soon as possible.
