Green light for new speed limits 

 

THE CABINET today (June 1) approved draft ministerial regulations on new speed limits according to the type of vehicles and the characteristics of the roads to suit traffic conditions and comply with international standards, Amarin TV said this afternoon (June 1).

The regulation for Bangkok, Pattaya City and community areas is as follows:

– 1. Trucks weighing more than 2,200 kilogrammes, vehicles carrying more than 15 passengers, school buses and motorcycles the maximum speed is 60 kilometres an hour.

– 2. Vehicles towing other vehicles, small four-wheel vehicles or tricycles the maximum speed is 45 kilometres an hour.

Previously trucks weighing not more than 1,200 kilogrammes and passenger vehicles could drive in these areas at not more than 60 kms an hour and outside it not more than 80 kms an hour.

Regulation applying to areas outside Bangkok, Pattaya City and community areas modified as follows:

– 1. Trucks weighing more than 2,200 kilogrammes and vehicles carrying more than 15 passengers may drive at maximum speed of 80 kms an hour.

– 2. School buses and motorcycles may drive at maximum speed of 70 km an hour. 

– 3. Vehicles towing other vehicles, small four-wheel vehicles or tricycles may drive at maximum speed of 55 kms per hour.

As for roads with at least two lanes going in the same direction and have  a traffic island in the middle the speed limits are as follows:

– 1. Trucks weighing more than 2,200 kilogrammes and vehicles carrying more than 15 passengers have a maximum speed of 80 kms an hour.

– 2. School buses and motorcycles have a maximum speed of 80 kms an hour.

– 3. Vehicles towing other vehicles, small four-wheel vehicles or tricycles have a maximum speed of 65 kms an hour.

On expressways:

– 1. Trucks weighing more than 2,200 kilogrammes, vehicles carrying more than 15 passengers and school buses running on tracks built above or below ground level or beneath a body of water the maximum speed is 80 kms an hour. Should the road be at ground level maximum speed is 90 kms an hour.

–  2.Vehicles towing other vehicles the maximum speed is 65 kms an hour.

In this regard, the agency responsible for taking care of roads and traffic markings will be modifying signs in keeping with the new speed limits.
