Speeding cop who killed doctor faces seven charges

THE policeman who hit a woman doctor at a Phaya Thai road pedestrian crossing while zooming through on a big bike on Jan. 21 leading to her death faces seven serious charges, police said today (Jan. 24).

The charges filed against Pol. L/Col Norawit Buadok are as follows:

–  Driving recklessly leading to the death of other people;

– Using a vehicle without a licence plate;

–  Failure to follow the markings on the road, that is did not stop to let people cross the road;

– Not riding the big bike close to the left side of the road;

– Using a vehicle for which the annual tax has not been paid;

– Riding an incomplete vehicle because this motorcycle does not have rear view mirrors;

– While compulsory insurance was obtained, there is no additional insurance cover.

Pol. Maj. Gen. Jirasan Kaewsaeng-ek, spokesman of Metropolitan Police, confirmed that the big bike which hit Dr. Waralak Supawatchariyakul at the zebra crossing in front of Bhumirajanagarindra Kidney Institute Hospital around 3 p.m. that day had not been impounded and was a second-hand one that the accused policeman bought on December 14 for 113,000 baht.

He also explained that the two hours delay in contacting the deceased doctor’s relatives was because police could not unlock her phone. It was only when a friend of hers called that they were eventually able to first reach her brother.

As for Pol. L/Col Norawit wanting to ordain and dedicate merit to the deceased doctor, Pol. Maj. Gen. Jirasan said temples are unable to ordain a man facing criminal charges.

Regarding ordination in front of the fire at Wat Phra Sri Mahathat, talks are still being held with temple authorities and her relatives whether this would be allowed.

  1. Isn’t a hit-and-run killing also a serious crime? Or leaving the scene of an accident? Or failing to render assistance to the injured person?
