British man kills self after quarrels with wife over pension

A BRITISH man stressed out at not receiving his pension with this leading to incessant quarrels with his Thai wife hanged himself in Udon Thani province, Naewna newspaper said today (Jan. 31).

At 11 a.m. today  Pol. Lt. Col. Plewthong Sareenan, duty officer for criminal cases at Mueang Udon Thani police station, was notified that a foreign man was found hanged to death at Ban Nong Na Kham village so rushed there together with a forensic doctor from Udon Thani Hospital and volunteers from Udon Sawang Metha Thamsathan Foundation.

They found that the deceased, identified as Mr. Mark Anthony, 67, had hanged himself with a television cable at a hut in the rice field and had been dead for around nine hours.

His wife, Ms. Phacharin Charoenpheng, 44, said yesterday afternoon they had again quarrelled over her husband, who used to work as a chef at a restaurant in the UK, not having received a monthly pension of 40,000 baht despite having retired two years ago.

He had been living with her here for 13 years and had been spending his savings while she traded in the market.

She added that he had tried contacting the embassy but failed to make headway because of the Covid pandemic.

Yesterday afternoon after their argument he left the house but she did not think he would kill himself and after searching for him found him dead.

Police have taken the deceased man’s body to Udon Thani Hospital and will be coordinating with the embassy to inform his relatives to arrange a funeral because he and his wife had not registered their marriage.
